When it comes to leading people, Mabel believes that we should love our people (in the most professional way, of course). However, this wasn’t always the case for her. As a neurodiverse individual and ex-perfectionist, Mabel used to be highly concerned with processes and procedures. People, relationships, and her social skills were the least of her worries. She had a pragmatic approach to people and held them to a high standard. However, this approach didn't work for her.
Her individual and organizational clients can benefit from these insights without the need to become therapists.
In fact, too few studies have been done on women of color’s neurodiversity. As a researcher, Mabel is determined to change that.
As a woman of color with cognitive differences, DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) are not buzzwords but something that she truly champions.

A few of the most unusual foods I have ever eaten were in China, where I tried fried cicadas, scorpions, and fire ants. I believe leadership and life require cultural humility in addition to cultural competence.
Competence implies that there is categorical knowledge a person can acquire regarding a particular group of people, thereby resulting in stereotyping and bias. Further, it implies that there is an endpoint to becoming fully culturally proficient. Developing cultural humility is a dynamic and lifelong process involving self-reflection, personal critique, and acknowledging one's biases. As a leadership coach and woman of color, I strive to bring Cultural Humility into leadership conversations.
It is important to me that I maintain some level of food security in my backyard. I believe leadership and gardening follow a similar development path in that people grow in stages. Understanding each individual's needs, when to try new things, and how to maintain consistency ensure a rewarding growth experience. Like my garden, I’m always thinking about the next step!
